Frequently Asked Questions
What does hosting mean?

Hosting is the providing of space on our servers (computers) for your website's HTML files and graphic images so it can be viewed over the Internet.

When a website is created, the files of the website must be stored on a server with a direct connection to the Internet, along with technical programming configurations for the site to be accessible to the World Wide Web.

Hosting is like storing your website files in a filing cabinet, and every time your website address is called up, the filing cabinet drawer is opened and the correct pages are accessed; except all of this is done digitally.

It's much more cost-effective to rent server space from a Web Hosting Provider than to buy your own server computers, T3 connections to the Internet backbones, and to hire technical staff to keep the servers running properly.

Do I have to keep my computer constantly turned on if I have my own website?

No, your website is hosted on our servers. If people access your website through the Internet, they are viewing the site as it exists on the server not your computer.

Exactly what are all the costs associated with having a website?

  • To own your own domain name, such as www.something.com will cost you a yearly registration fee. You can purchase your domain name from QuestMatrix at a cost of $14.95 per year or you can purchase your domain name from another Registrar. You can pay for as little as a year registration or as much as a 10 year registration. These registrations have to be kept current, so you do not loose your domain name if it expires. What is a domain name?

A Domain Name is a web address such as www.something.com. A Domain Name is the core of your online identity. It is the address web surfers use to find your website. Your Domain Name is yours entirely because once registered, no other party may use that identity online in that Top Level Domain.

Computers on the Internet use IP (Internet Protocol) numbers (e.g., 00.00.00.00) to locate other computers. Internet users would have a difficult time remembering these long strings of numbers to find sites, so Domain Names were developed to translate IP numbers into easy to remember Domain Names.

Typically businesses use .com, traditionally, names in .net have been used by organizations involved in Internet infrastructure activities and .org is frequently used by not-for-profit organizations.

What does it mean to register a domain name?

The Internet Domain Name System (DNS) consists of a directory, organized hierarchically, of all the domain names and their corresponding computers registered to particular companies and persons using the Internet. When you register a domain name, it will be associated with the computer on the Internet you designate during the period the registration is in effect.

How long does it take for a domain name to be active?

Once your domain name has been registered it can be visible immediately to all users of the Internet once we have programmed it on our servers. If you transfer a domain name over to us it can take up to 72 hours to be live; this is because all Internet Service Providers need to update their records to show the new location of your domain name. This is called propagation.

What is a domain email?

You can have several unique email addresses associated with your domain name such as contact@something.com.

What does Registrant mean?

The entity, organization, or individual who is the owner/lease holder of a particular domain name is known as the Registrant. What is a Registry?

The Registry is where Registrars create new or modify existing domain names for Registrants. For the .Com, Net, and .Org extensions the Registry is a US government contracted database.

What is DNS?

DNS stands for Domain Name System. This System translates a domain name such as something.com into IP numbers. DNS is basically a piece of translation software which allows humans and computers to easily communicate. The network of computers that constitute the Internet map domain names to their corresponding IP numbers.

What are Primary and Secondary Name Servers?

The Primary and Secondary Name Servers indicate the hostname of a name server that will contain authoritative data for the domain name being registered and will deliver/translate that domain name to its corresponding IP number. The designation of "secondary" indicates that the name server will be used in addition to and as a backup for the primary name server that is listed as Primary.

Example:
Primary Name Server: NS1.QUESTVIRTUAL.COM
Primary IP Address: 72.52.193.29
Secondary Name Server: NS2.QUESTVIRTUAL.COM
Secondary IP Address: 72.52.193.30

What are Primary and Secondary IP Address/Numbers?
